MLK Unveiling Weekend
It was such a pleasure for me to get the opportunity to volunteer for the weekend of events surrounding the massive unveiling of the Martin Luther King Jr. statue in the National Mall. As a matter of fact, when I was pursuing Alpha, I was well aware that there would be and unveiling in January but had no clue that I would be able to be so involved in the festivities. Now if you have seen my previous post in my blog about Dr. King you would understand how much I have admired his work in the black community - So for me, becoming an Alpha couldn’t have come at a better time. Myself and my line brothers were asked to be celeberty escorts for the weekend. It was almost surreal. There were so many famous people in the building that day whom I remember watching on television as a child just wanting to be where they were and a chance to actually see what their personalities would be like. We were each paired with a different person for the day and I was paired with Kenny Lattimore. So often people put so much emphasis on - OMG!!!! your’re…insert celebrity name here - but they are just regular people with a bigger fan base. Most of them were very easy to talk to and open to giving advice and taking pictures. I tried to always keep a calm cool head and remain professional at all times even though inside, I wanted to run up to Keisha Knight Pulliam and sneak a kiss. The event was wonderfully filled with tributes and theatrical performances, speeches and poetry, and most importantly good people coming together to honor a man that has paved the way for many of us to be in the position we are in today. For this opportunity, I thank my fraternity and will continue to give back always. APhi!!!!06!!!!!!!!!!! MLK Unveiling Weekend
